A call for gamers from across the globe

I’m a Swedish gamer, and I have insight in what happens on the Swedish RPG scene, such as it is.  Also, I learned some English in school, and thanks to that I can follow what’s going on in the US and UK. I can even play games from those areas.  A little remains of the German I took fifteen or twenty years ago in school, so with some effort I can follow discussions on German forums, and even read a game or two if I take my time.

Swedish is also similar enough to Danish and Norwegian that I can follow discussions on internet forums in those countries without too much problem.  But there it ends.

I know that RPGs are played in Poland, France, Italy, Japan, China, South America, French speaking parts of Canada and loads of other places, but I can’t really learn what’s going on there. And I want to know!

What games do they play? Have they taken up on the ‘indie wave’ of games like many gamers in my parts have done?  Are they still playing traditional games? Do they have their own form of freeform gaming, different from the kind I see people play here where I live?

Also, I’m doing a podcast. Most of the episodes are in Swedish, but a few are in English. And they offer gamers from around the world a glimpse of what RP looks like in these parts. A very focused glimpse of what’s going on in my own immediate circles, true, but it’s something.

I’ve been thinking about recording episodes where I discuss role playing games with people from around the world. Glimpses into gaming in far away places. The discussions or interviews could cover anything related to the hobby, whatever you think is interesting is what I want to hear about.

Are you a gamer living in another country?  Would you like to be a guest on my podcast? What would you like to talk about?

I have never been a guest on a podcast before, but if you want to talk to a female gamer in the U.S. who has been playing RPGs for over 30 years, I’d be happy to chat 🙂

I live in Switzerland… but I don’t have a good topic idea. I’m currently running the one page dungeon contest? I like games that don’t encourage character builds and don’t require constant lookup at the table. Old school D&D, indie games, that’s what I like…

I used to live and play in Hungary. Indie games are not really widespread, the main reason being that there is a surprisingly successful game that was published a few years ago in Hungarian, together with follow up products (such as monster compendiums, game modules, etc) and standalone books/series in that universe.
To give you an idea how successful the game is: there are a lot of players in Hungary, who play this game, but don\t know what D&D is..

It’s called M.A..G.U.S, but for obvious reasons there are very few non hungarian pages about it.

This sounds very interesting! I’d love to hear more about the Hungarian gaming scene and the M.A.G.U.S RPG.

Hi there~ I live in South Korea and would be happy to talk about games over here. There are a couple that are only in Korean but D&D and, for some reason, GURPS is really big over here. Though I’ve been really happy to see some rpgs make it over here.

Hi there! I’m from Portugal and we have a very small RPG community here. People here mostly play traditional RPGs like D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: the Masquerade and Warhammer 40K and we don’t usually play LARP or any kind of freeform game

In 2006 we had a micro-explosion of people founding out about indie games and RPG Theory in our main RPG community website, “Abre o Jogo”. Unfortunately it crashed and burned in an hysterical flame war. Since then we play a lot of different games, including indies, at our monthly meet-ups and Fiasco and Lady Blackbird have become two of our most played games there.

In the past years there has been a nice virtual on-going conversation between portuguese and brazilian designers as we share the same language. 🙂

Brazil has a big RPG community and their newfound Indie community is really prospering. One of its crowdfunding projects, “Violentina”, has already came to the atention of the american indie community on the Story Games forum: http://www.story-games.com/forums/discussion/16896/violentina-a-tarantino-rpg-from-brazil/p1

And like said on Google+, here in Portugal, Ricardo Tavares of the portuguese language Jogador Sonhador RPG podcast started a kind of 7-days long NaNoWriMo for roleplaying games called “RPGenesis” (http://www.abreojogo.com/2012/07/rpgenesis_2012#comment-64398).

Its third edition ended last August 27th and it’s now a Portuguese-Brazilian online initiative.

In Brazil they also have “Faça Você Mesmo”, a kind of “contest” heavily modelled after GameChef and organized by a local indie publisher called Secular Games (http://www.secular-games.com/2012/02/concurso-faca-voce-mesmo-de-criacao-de-jogos-2012/).

These initiatives contributed to a lot of new games being now presently developed and discussed.

Er… Sorry for the long comment, it’s turning out gigantic! I just would like to say that me and a brazilian roleplayer have already appeared in an Jennisodes podcast episode about portuguese and brazilian RPG community. If you would like you can listen it here: http://www.jennisodes.com/podcasts/portugal-and-brazil/

It would be great to talk about more about games here or the portuguese-speaking RPG communities in general or maybe point you to someone who would like to talk about it. I don’t know what other topics we could talk about besides that but it wouldn’t hard to find something. 🙂

      This sounds awesome!

I’ll get in touch via email, let’s see if we can record an episode for the podcast.
